Just before we go into the real deal, I want to blot out the fear that most of us have.

There is nothing to warrant any form of fear in the Canadian Visa Application.

If you’ve ever applied for an international seminar outside of Nigeria, then there is nothing you should be afraid of. Why? Because it is almost like the same process.

The difference is, your application has to be processed based on your qualifications as a PR.

Getting Canadian Permanent Residency in Nigeria via Visa Application

A Permanent Resident in Canada is someone who has been given a legal approval by the Canadian Government to work, live, and enjoy the numerous benefits (health care, housing, etc.) as the Canadian Citizens.

When you land in Canada, you will be issued your special Permanent Resident card. This will be issued approximately 60 days of landing on the Canadian soil.

But where everything starts is with the Visa Application Process.

 

Before we go into the main context of applying for the Canadian express entry from Nigeria, let’s understand what Canada Visa Application means.

 

What is Canada Visa Application in Nigeria?

Canadian Visa is all about getting the approval to travel to Canada based on the routes you want to use.

Now when we talk of the Canada Visa Application, this explains the route or process we want to use for the Canadian Visa.

As we know, there are many ways to do this, we have the 2 popular application routes, the Express Entry Program and the Provincial Nominee program. 

Going on, we have Business Immigration application, Student Visa application, Rural Northern Visa Application and many more.

In today’s guide, we are going to see how to apply for the Canadian Visa using the Express Entry route. 

 

Understanding Relocation to Canada through the Express Entry Program in Nigeria

The EEP or Federal Express Entry program started in 2015. The essence of it was and is to grant those with work experience or skills in any profession to relocate to Canada.

Just like boarding a taxi to relocate from one city to the other, the relocation via Express Entry is Canada’s main system for managing immigration applications for skilled workers.

Express Entry is not just an immigration program, but a system used to process applications for three distinct immigration programs in Canada, each targeting a different type of skilled worker.

 

How Express Entry Program Works in Nigeria

Using the Express Entry process requires that you submit skill or work experience, educational height(s), educational background, IELTS and other requirements you will soon find out for each round and yearly draws – selection process.

As soon as you complete and cross-check your Express Entry profile, you are required to submit it for evaluation.

From the information you supply, you will be assigned a cutoff point – like JAMB score.

But in this case, it is called, CRS point. CRS means the Comprehensive Ranking System.

With the score, your data will be weighed and generated based on requirements.

And if you are qualified based on your cut-off points, you will be notified for the next application process. 

 

And it should be noted that, unlike the Provincial Nominee Program where you reside in your nominated province, with Express Entry Program, you can live wherever you want (choose) in Canada.

 

Top 3 Canadian Relocation by Express Entry

There are 3 types of EEP namely, Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Trades Program, and Federal Skilled Worker Program.

For Nigerians, the frequently used is the Federal Skilled Worker Program.

It may interest you to know that the Federal Skilled Worker Program is the most popular Express Entry aligned program, receiving more than half of all invitations.

 To qualify, you need:

• Work experience: Minimum of 12 months of full-time, skilled work experience.
• Language: Score Canadian Language Benchmark Level (CLB) 7 on an approved language test.
• Settlement or Proof of Funds: You must have enough funds to support your settlement in Canada.
• Education: Minimum of Canadian high school education, or foreign equivalent, etc.

In summary, this is a relocation program whereby the Canadian authority uses selection factor points to help assess your eligibility for the Federal Skilled Worker Program.

When your selection factors is assessed, you will then be assigned an overall score out of 100 wherefore you will be told what next.

Today, our relocation route is focused on the Federal Skilled Worker Program.

 

Let’s talk about the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points before we go to the main visa application process.

 

What you must know about Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is a point-based system the Canadian Immigration Commission uses to assess and score your profile and rank you in the Express Entry pool.

The points you get from the CRS include a core set of points up to 600 and a set of additional points up to 600.

You can grab the first 600 Points through the following factors.

1. Skills and experience factors.
2. Spouse or common-law partner factors, such as their language skills and education.
3. Skills transferability, including education and work experience.

 

Later on you will see how to increase your CRS points.

 

We are almost there.

 

How To Successfully Relocate To Canada from Nigeria – 2 Options Application

Now, you have in your hands the right steps to Canadian Express Entry, but before we see how to, you have 2 options here.

Option 1 – you can do it following the steps below.

Option 2 – you can use Victor Jegede’s guide to follow through.

Let’s see how to do it yourself, and later on I will talk more about Jegede’s PR in Canada Blueprint.

How To Apply for Permanent Residency via Canada Express Entry from Nigeria in 7 Steps

While Jegede’s Blueprint shows you the exact step-by-step method to relocating to Canada using this route, here are the steps to the relocation process.

Kindly note that this Visa Application is using the Federal Skilled Workers Program route. Here we go.

 

1. Test Your Relocation Eligibility for Express Entry Program

The first step with the Express Entry is to check your eligibility in the program.

To test your eligibility, all you need to do is take a simple Questionnaire on the Canadian Immigration website.

 

If you have not done a language test yet you can give yourself a realistic test score and fill out other information.

By recommendation, just give yourself a test score lower than what you think you may score so you will know how to work on the language test.

If proven eligible, then move to the next step.

And if not, try to increase your CRS points and try again.  

 

Kindly note: The eligibility test tool here will help you calculate your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score based on the answers you provide in the questionnaire, and it is not a perfect tool.

In the event of any lack of compatibility or similarity between the results of this questionnaire tool and that provided by the Express Entry electronic system, the results provided by the Express system shall govern.

So, as far as you have the basic requirements here, you are required to complete your profile and get the main Express Entry electronic system result which is the accurate parameters for your eligibility.

 

1b. Find out your work NOC (National Occupational Classification

When applying for your Canadian visa, you will need to classify your occupation using the codes are defined by the Canadian immigration authority, and so, if you had before now changed jobs, you will know the correct category code that you should use in your application.  

For instance, you have the following occupational classification codes.

Skill Type 0 (zero): management jobs, such as:

• restaurant managers
• mine managers
• shore captains (fishing)

Skill Level A: professional jobs that usually call for a degree from a university, such as:

• doctors
• dentists
• architects

Skill Level B: technical jobs and skilled trades that usually call for a college diploma or training as an apprentice, such as:

• chefs
• plumbers
• electricians.

2. Get your Profile Entry Documents Ready

Upon being eligible for the Express Entry Pool, the next step is to prepare your documents to create your Express Entry profile.

Here are the documents you need to get ready. 

• Passport

 You want to make sure that your passport is ready where you will use for identification.

• Evaluate your Credentials 

Credential evaluation puts you on the same radar as those in Canada.

Let’s say you studied a degree course like Economics for 4 years in Nigeria, with credential evaluation you will be assessed appropriately wherefore you will be ranked equivalent to someone with a degree in Canada.  

You might ask, why can’t I just use my certificate or transcript?

Answer: the Canadian Immigration Program for EEP does not allow direct usage of certificates or transcripts.

 

So, how do you get this done?

There are several agencies that can help you but the popular one is WES.

So, what you need to do is submit your documents for evaluation on WES’s website.

• Language Proficiency

You need Language Proficiency results from an approved language test you took within the two years prior to creating your profile.

Having done your WES, go ahead and register for IELTS. This costs about N75,000.

 

Of course, because Canada does not communicate using Igbo or Nigerian Vernacular, it therefore means (you) everyone applying for Canadian PR will have to take a language test to show proficiency in either French or English. You even get bonus points if you can prove both!

For English it is called IELTS, and for French test – TEF.

 

3. Submit Your Online Express Entry Profile

Having successfully followed the above steps, it’s now time to create your Express Entry Profile.

This is a MUST step before being qualified to submitting your application for the Federal Express Entry Pool.

 

 

A recap of how the Express Entry Profile Works

You will be asked for personal information, work history, educational details, and etc.

In all these, it’s important to tell nothing but the truth because of:

• The details will add up to give you a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) Score and,
• If found out you were playing funny you will be banned from the program, forever (maybe).

 

Now every two weeks a draw is made from the pool of submitted Express Entry profiles.

This draw is done to offer “Invitation to Apply” to candidates qualified.

The exact cut-off score is determined by the number of selections the committee plans to choose from that draw.

Going on,

Having completed your profile, welcome as you have officially joined the Express Entry Pool.

What you need to do is wait for your result. But while you wait, you can start applying for jobs via the Canadian Job banks.

 

Kindly note, your profile will close within 60 days of opening it if you do not submit your data, so try to complete it as soon as you can.

 

Once again, click here to create your Express Entry Profile.

 

4. Get your Invitation to Apply (ITA)

Having completed your profile and shortlisted, you will receive an official statement from the Canadian Visa Office for ITA saying”

Dear [your name]
Congratulations! You have been accepted in the Express Entry Pool of Candidates.”

 

When you receive it go ahead and apply for your Canadian permanent residency.

On the other hand, (I don’t wish to spoil your party), but what if you don’t get an ITA?

Don’t worry, we will see exactly how to go about it and win.  

 

5. Respond to your Invitation To Apply & Apply for Canadian Permanent Residency

Now that you have been issued an “Invitation To Apply”, you need to sign in to your account and submit all the required documents as seen in your account.

At this point, you’ll get a message in your account telling you:

• which program you’ve been invited to apply for
• what to do next.

Note that you’ll need to show proof of the information you filled in your Express Entry profile.

When you do, they’ll assess whether the information you submit in your application is different from what was in your profile.

And if they find out that you gave a false information or left out important details, they could:

• refuse your application
• find you inadmissible
• bar you for 5 years from applying to come to Canada for any reason.

So, like I said make sure to fill in nothing but the right information in time of document reassessment.

 

Also, note that you only have 90 days to complete this application!

 

Fortunately, at this point, you’re one leg in.

Meaning, the subsequent steps are simple to follow through.

All you need to do is follow the instructions you’re given.  

 

Talking about 90 days period.

Now what will happen if you don’t decline an invitation and you don’t apply within 90 days?

Answer: “the invitation will expire and your profile will be removed from the pool”.

At this point, if you’re still interested in the Canadian relocation process then you have to:

 #1. Fill out and submit a new Express Entry profile,

 #2. Meet the eligibility to be considered in future rounds of invitations, and,

#3. Get accepted into the pool again.

 

All in all. Don’t waste time.

Just go ahead and respond to the “Invitation To Apply” and submit all your documents.

 

Kindly note: in the course of submitting your documents, you may be called to submit your bio metrics at a local embassy or Visa Facilitation Services (VFS).

Just do as asked and you are fine. And if you’re not called for submission then fine as well.

 

6. Get Your Application Result

An official statement from the Canadian Immigration Authority (IRCC) is that, 80% of all applicants (like you) receive a response within 6 months.

What you don’t want to do…Worrying for 6 months.

It is also recommended you monitor your email account for notifications.

To follow up the application you want to frequently or intermittently log in to your profile and check your application status.

7. Receive a PPR – Passport Request Email & other documents needed for Immigration – Ready for Visa

When once you get your letter of approval, you can send in your passports.

Your Canadian Permanent Residence approval will also come with a deadline when you have to enter into Canada or else your PR will be invalidated.

 

“By the way, PPR is Passport request if you are from country that requires visa to be printed for you to land as an Immigrant. This request is made when your Permanent residence application is at final stage and is ready to be finalized”.

 

Upon receiving your PR approval, you need to pack your bags and tell friends and family goodbye as you have between 6 months to 1 year from the approval to land in Canada.

 

What to do if you’re not issued an “Invitation To Apply”

Now if for any reasons (like not enough CRS points – you will see why) you’re not invited to apply within 12 months of submitting your Express Entry profile, your profile entries will automatically expire. What does that mean?

Your profile will be removed from the system with a message and date in your account. 

No need to become depressed or discouraged, (if you want to use Jegede’s relocation blueprint you can ask him what to do), but if you are doing it on your own then here are a few things to do.

 

Solution #1. Create a new profile for next round.

Note: you don’t need to create a new profile until your existing profile expires.

That is why you need to improve your CRS points for the next pool with a new profile if your scores wasn’t enough.

Solution #2. Use your Profile for Express Entry Provincial Nominee Program.

And how does that work?

Now let’s imagine that your CRS points wasn’t enough for the EEP pool, you can use the one you have and apply for Canadian Visa in another Province accepting such a CRS point.

For instance, let’s say you had a cutoff point of 400 and a particular Canadian provinces like Manitoba accepts such then you can use it for Manitoba Visa Application.

This type of application is known as “Express Entry-Provincial Nominee Program “.

It’s just like a supplementary for Express Entry.

That is, where you failed in the Federal Skilled Workers Express Entry you make up for a Canadian province that accepts such.

Solution #3. Use other Canadian Relocation Routes

If after all these you see that your chances are slim, then all you can do is to use other Canadian Relocation Routes that is less hectic to relocate.

But note that, if you can fulfill all the requirements with the Express Entry skilled workers program, it is the best and recommended route as you relocate with your head up that you fulfilled all the Canadian Visa requirements.

So, don’t give up on first trial if you don’t get it.  

Try again because “just that one” approval is worth more than the trials. 

 

At this point, let me summarize how your CRS points can be improved for reconsideration.

 

Just as we said in step 3 about submitting your Express Entry Profile where you’ll be selected in the pool if you are approved for the next step.

Now, here are the factors you can increase your chances in the pool, AKA, increasing your CRS points.

Additional points: Up to 600 points

1. If you have a Canadian degree, diploma or certificate.
2. A valid job offer from a Canadian company or organization.
3. A nomination from a particular Canadian province or territory
4. A brother or sister living in Canada who is a citizen or permanent resident.
5. A strong French language skills in addition to English.

 

All in all, your main profile score points + the above Additional points = your total CRS score, up to 1,200.

The above are some of the steps you can take to increase your relocation chances by boosting your CRS points in the next Express Entry Pool round – if only the first wasn’t enough. 

 

We are done with option 1.

In summary of the EEP application. It is #1. Get your credentials for application ready.

#2 Apply for EEP.

#3. Wait for the Express Entry Draw and follow the instructions from there.
